Helen, 27, grew up in Farmington, N.M., and has two sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret, as well as two nephews, Robert and Daniel. Her sisters, as well as her parents, Robert and Teresa, live in Farmington, so she gets back there as often as she can. Helen went to college in San Antonio at St. Mary's University. She graduated in 2000 with an English Communications Arts degree and went to work at the Express-News, working the business news department putting together the paper's stocks pages and helping things run smoothly. After two years, she decided to follow her passion for photography and went back to school to get her photojournalism master's degree. In June she started work as a photographer at the Corpus Christi Caller Times. Besides photography, her other hobbies include reading, running and listening to Christian music.
John, 28, grew up in Charlotte, N.C., and Waco, Texas, and is an only child. His dad, Keith, lives in Charlotte and his mom and stepfather, Virginia and Larry Adams, live in San Angelo, Texas. John graduated from UT-Austin in 1999 and went to work at the Express-News, where he's done a variety of jobs. Most recently he has worked as the assistant news editor, helping to edit the newspaper's page one stories and presentation. His hobbies include reading, writing, walking and building Web pages.
Helen and John were introduced by a co-worker at the San Antonio Express-News in August 2000. At the time, Helen was the business editorial assistant, John was a copy editor for the business section and their co-worker designed the business pages. But more than just business was on Helen and John's minds. Many of their early conversations were over the Internet, a medium that now helps bridge the 150 mile distance between San Antonio and Corpus Christi. UPDATE: As of 2005, Helen and John are now both in San Antonio.
John gets ready to pop the question. He proposed to Helen on Aug. 13, 2003, in Austin. (Journalistic note: Photo illustration. Re-creation of an actual event.)
Helen shows off her ring immediately afterward. (She said "yes"). (Journalistic note: Photo illustration. Ring's sparkle may have been enhanced with Photoshop. Actual size shown.)
